Chelsea’s New Beginning: Being Heard Without a Voice, With Daniel Keith Austin

Filed in Podcasts, Previous Episodes on August 29, 2024

Chelsea the Golden Retriever is a series of children’s books created by author, actor, autism advocate, and animal rights activist Daniel Keith Austin.

Revolving around the life story of a Golden Retriever based on Daniel’s childhood dog, this series breaks down and transforms complicated, contentious themes into an understandable, relatable tale that powerfully addresses themes of abandonment, the need for acceptance and belonging, and triumph over adversity through seemingly impossible challenges from the perspective of someone who lacks a human voice.

Through Chelsea’s eyes, Daniel invites you to join an engaging and thought-provoking story arc around Chelsea becoming a therapy dog for people on the severe autism spectrum.

Tune in to hear Daniel’s thoughts on:

  • Where did the name Chelsea come from? Who was Chelsea?
  • What inspired you to write children’s books?
  • Have you always loved animals? What is your favorite animal?
  • What is your favorite dog breed?
  • Have you had other dogs besides Chelsea?
  • Do you currently have pets?
  • Will this be part of a series?
  • Tell me more about the other dogs and cats in Chelsea’s New Beginning
  • And much, much more!

Daniel Keith Austin is an author, actor, autism advocate, and animal rights activist who understands the impact of autism on children and families firsthand, having grown up as one of four siblings who have all been diagnosed autistic at various points on the spectrum. He was born in Sedalia, Missouri, and spent the earliest part of his childhood living in two Air Force bases - Whiteman in Missouri and Sheppard in Texas. His series of children’s books, Chelsea the Golden Retriever, is inspired by the pet Golden Retriever who spent three years with Daniel and his family as he was growing up. She passed away when Daniel was seven, and the family moved to Kansas shortly after. Daniel graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. He participates in local theatre productions and volunteers at animal shelters, rescue groups, and sanctuaries. Today, Daniel is based in Merriam, Kansas with his two cats, Iris and Ivy, and travels around the country in conjunction with his theater and advocacy work.
